How to Play Craps
There is a lot of craps lingo or craps terminology associated with the game which can make it seem super complicated to new players, but in actual fact, craps is simple enough in its essence.
The first thing you need to do is get familiar with the standard craps table. Once you know this, the game will seem much simpler.
You will see that all the way around the outside of the table is a ‘pass line’. This is for players who want to bet with the shooter.
You will also see the ‘don’t pass bar’. This is for players who want to bet against the shooter.
You will also see a section that says ‘field’. This is for single bets that say either two, three, four, ten, eleven or twelve will come up next.
Then you will see 4, 5, six, 8, nine, 10 in boxes at the top of the table. These are for bets known as ‘place’ or ‘buy’ bets, and they are betting the number(s) you bet on will come up before the next seven is rolled. The reason the six and nine are spelled and not numerical is because craps players in a bricks and mortar casinos stand all around the table and sometimes get these numbers confused when looking from different angles.
You will also see boxes with BIG6 and BIG8 in them. These are bets that either a six or eight will come up before the next seven.
The idea is for you to place your chips on the table, betting on the correct number(s), and hope for the best. Craps is a dice game, meaning nobody can tell what the outcome will be. You will need lady luck on your side to win craps online.
Once you have placed your bets the dice will be rolled and that’s it. See – it’s a much simpler game than the table and craps lingo make it seem.
The key to winning is understanding the craps payouts and probabilities and making your bets in alignment with these.
Craps Rules – the Basics
Remember these basic craps rules and you will soon grasp the game.
- Each player takes a turn at rolling the dice. The player currently rolling is called the shooter.
- The shooter has to bet the minimum on either the pass line or the don’t pass line.
- Each game of craps has two phases – the ‘come out’ and the ‘point’.
- To start the game, the shooter rolls for the first time. This is called the ‘come out’ roll. What happens next depends on the number the shooter rolls:
- If the shooter rolls two, three, or twelve, the round ends and everyone who bet on the pass line loses.
- If the shooter rolls seven or eleven, the everyone who bet on the pass line wins.
- If/when the shooter rolls a four, five, six, eight, nine, or ten, then the game proceeds to the ‘point’ phase as a point has been established.
- During this phase of the craps game, if the shooter rolls a point number, pass line bets win, and if he rolls a seven, the round ends with pass line bets losing. All other bets on the table must be placed before the shooter rolls the dice. This proceeds until the round ends.
These are the essential craps rules. If you memorize them (or bookmark this page to refer to them later), you will be able to understand craps game flow and will come to master craps in time.

If an instantly accessible craps table in your pocket sounds good, a mobile craps app or mobile casino is the way to go.
Anonymity/Privacy
While lots of people might use a home computer or laptop, we’re willing to bet you are the only personal who uses your personal mobile device. If you want to keep your casino gaming quiet, mobile casino apps can allow you this privacy.
Craps Strategy & Tips
You might wonder how to win craps every time, but the truth is this is largely a game of luck. Since it depends on the roll of a dice, which nobody can predict, you will have to rely on common sense craps strategies and hope lady luck shows her face and decides to dance with you.
First, understand the game before you play for real money. There are free craps apps and free craps games online which can allow you to practice until you feel you understand the rules, game flow, and what the different bets mean.
Second, if you are going to bet on the come our roll, before the point has been established, the best bet you can make is on the pass line. At this stage, the house edge is a mere 1.41%, giving you a great chance to win money playing craps.
Third, always take the odds bet. Once the shooter has established a point, you will get to place an ‘odds bet’, which is sort of a side bet if you will. The odds bet pays if the point number is thrown before a seven. There is zero house edge on the odds bet. How much it pays depends on the point.
Finally, stay well away from the proposition, single roll bets. While these might have attractive payouts if they come good, the chances are they won’t. The house edge on these bets can be huge.
