Bally Technologies’ history can be traced back to the days long, long before the internet was even thought of – all the way back to 1932 in fact. The ‘Bally Manufacturing Corporation’ sprang into life as a Chicago-based company making pinball machines, hence ‘Ball’-y. The company was actually named in honour of the first pinball game it created, which was named ‘Ballyhoo’.
Pretty soon, Bally became the leading pinball manufacturer in the USA after a pinball craze swept the nation. The country was recovering from the worst years of the Great Depression that began in 1929, and was looking for cheap and cheerful ways in which to have a bit of fun. Pinball had previously been purely a mechanical game, but Bally and other companies found ways to add electrified lights and sound effects to their pinball tables, resulting in the first golden age for pinball in the USA.
Bally evolved into a company that also made coin-operated slot machines, and eventually became the dominant manufacturer of slot machines in the USA. At one stage in the mid 1960s, a stunning ninety percent of all slot machines made in the US were made by Bally.
In the 1990s Bally began to manufacture video slots for real-world casinos, and towards the end of the decade started to release online video slots as well.
Despite making amazing real-world video slots, Bally have only allowed a handful of them to be converted to online versions. This is due to tensions between real-world and online casinos. Real-world casinos are not fond of their virtual-world counterparts as they feel internet-based casinos will drive away revenue-generating customers from their slots and gaming tables. As a large proportion of Bally’s revenue comes from real-world casinos, the company does as little as it can to upset them.
